Ive, the creative genius behind some of Apple’s most popular products such as the MacBook, iPod and iPhone, will use his tech experience to aid the RCA in its own push into digital-based courses in technology, science and engineering.

Vital to the UK economy there are fears that the vote to leave the European Union might discourage designers from migrating to Britain, something Ive is keen to address head on, warning that it is ‘terribly important’ that businesses retain access to global talent.

Commenting on his elevation Ive said that he was “thrilled to formalise my relationship with the RCA, given the profound influence the college has had on so many of the artists and designers that I admire."

He continued: “The UK has a fabulous tradition of design education, but we can always be doing better, given the way design has to meet new challenges and is in a constant fluid state of change. There are always ways design education can become more relevant.”

The largely ceremonial position will see Ive confer degrees to students as well as lead meetings of the college’s management team.

In 2015 the RCA established a UK design innovation lab in partnership with Tata.
