Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 leads social media charge

The intergalactic escapades of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper generated 916,000 social media conversations sparked by fans of the original spinning into online overdrive for the franchise reprise.

In terms of cumulative conversations Guardians falls some way short of big hitters Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Spider-Man: Homecoming - which generated 1,650,000 and 1,592,000 conversations respectively.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has raked in $100m of box office takings thus far before even launching in the US, where it is expected to take $150m in its opening weekend – compared with $770m taken in by the 2014 installment.

The Guardians universe has helped spur a mix tape revival with fast food chain Dairy Queen celebrating a cameo appearance in the film with an eighties musical number of its own.
