Amazon doles out free Prime accounts for Manchester-by-the-Sea residents in Oscars tribute

Amazon is dishing out free Prime accounts to all residents of Manchester-by-the-Sea in celebration of the Academy Awards winning film of the same name arriving on Prime Video this Friday.

Manchester By The Sea walked off with the Best Original Screenplay gong at this year’s Oscar’s with lead Casey Affleck also picking up a best actor accolade while Amazon Studios sister title, The Salesman, was recognised as best foreign language film.

Crucially this gives Amazon bragging rights over streaming rival Netflix which has yet to nab a best picture nomination of its own despite sinking billions of dollars into the production of original content.

Residents will be able to claim a free year-long Prime subscription to see what all the fuss is about for themselves and will even receive a bag of popcorn for an authentic cinematic experience, hand delivered to every household in a special gift box with redeemable code.

Census figures show there were 2,147 households in Manchester by the Sea at the last count, providing some cheer for the Massachusetts community.

Flush with its success Amazon has amassed a $4bn war chest to target its streaming rivals with original content.
