Woolworths could make a surprise return to British high streets after a former boss revealed his intent to resurrect the famous retailer after a near decade long absence.

Tony Page served as managing director at the business before it collapsed a decade ago amidst debts of close to £400m, undeterred, however, Page believes the brand could still have a future with the right backing.

Page states he has approached Shop Direct to purchase the venerable brand name back with a view to re-establishing a physical presence. The brand name was sold in the immediate aftermath of Woolworths collapse.

Prior to going bust, the Woolworths empire stretched to 800 stores managed by an army of 27,000 employees.

Woolworths was named as one of Britain's most missed high street brands last year, alongside Comet and Blockbuster, with sentimental shoppers clamouring for a return of the pick n Mix specialist.
