Verizon on course to launch online TV service with dozens of channels later in the year

US wireless carrier Verizon is rumored to be gearing up for the nationwide launch of an online TV service hosting dozens of channels later in the year.

The communications giant has been quietly snapping up streaming rights from television networks, a sign that any launch could be near, but it has yet to comment publicly on the speculation.

A streaming service would make sense for Verizon however which has had to tackle the growing issue of ‘cord cutting’ where subscribers cancel traditional cable providers in favour of streaming sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Rivals such as AT&T are already ahead of the curve in this regard with its own DirecTV streaming service.
