Disney has broken one of its last taboos by screening an ‘exclusively gay moment’ during a live action reproduction of Beauty and the Beast.

A racy new plot line has been written in which a manservant explores his sexuality on screen, culminating in an ‘exclusively gay moment’ – the first time the famously traditional media giant has depicted a same sex relationship on the big screen.

Stealing the limelight is LeFou who plays the part of the aforementioned manservant as he futilely struggles to contain his passion for lead man Gaston.

Explaining the set-up director Bill Condon said: “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.

“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings.

“And Josh [Gad, who plays LeFou] makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its pay-off at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

The reinterpretation of the classic is released in the UK on 17 March and stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Evans as the Beast.
