Facebook is branching out from its mobile and desktop domains with plans to develop a custom app for television set-top boxes according to reports.

The Wall Street Journal claims that the social media giant is eyeing a number of devices; including Apple TV, for the venture and has also opened conversations with media firms to license TV-grade programming.

While Facebook declined to pass comment on the reports such a move would make a great deal of sense from its perspective by positioning the company within the lucrative live stream and video advertisements sphere.

TV presence would give Facebook the leg-up it has long coveted to convince advertisers to purchase more video ads as opposed to low budget text and photo based promotions.

One area which Facebook will doubtless set its sights on is live video, with social platforms now in open competition to stream sports and major awards such as the Oscars and Grammy Awards.
