Airbnb has followed in Google’s footsteps to become the latest technology firm to voice criticism of a 90-day travel ban imposed by the Trump administration in the US.

Beyond moral and financial support the accommodation provider will offer free housing to any refugee or citizen who is barred from entering the country, sparking nationwide protests and international condemnation.

Tweeting his rationale behind the offer CEO Brian Chesky said: “Not allowing countries or refugees into America is not right, and we must stand with those who are affected.

“Open doors brings all of US together. Closing doors further divides US. Let's all find ways to connect people, not separate them.”

Chesky’s intervention follows implementation of a travel ban in which citizens of seven Muslim majority countries are banned from entering the US, with up to 200 people detained at airports as a result of the measure according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

A federal judge in New York City has granted a stay of execution to those detained against their deportation.
