Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has denied speculation that he might be tempted to follow in Donald Trump’s footsteps with a run at the presidency in 2020 by confirming that he had ‘no plans’ to take the most powerful role in the world.

Zuckerberg sought to downplay the speculation during an interview with BuzzFeed in which he said his priorities lay outside of politics, specifically in further developing Facebook and his $3bn Chan Zuckerberg charity.

Gossip has been swirling around Zuckerberg’s intentions ever since Bloomberg unearthed court filings indicating that the Facebook chief had negotiated a means to maintain control of the social media firm even in the event of his holding public office.

Adding fuel to the fire has been a steady stream of posts showing Zuckerberg meeting and greeting local officials, including a stopover at the Dallas Police Department, as part of a schedule that will see him travel to every US state by the end of the year.

Eyebrows have also been raised by Zuckerberg’s appointment of a photographer who once covered the Bush White House and his recruitment of a pair of political strategists to guide the Chan Zuckerberg initiative.

It also follows recent revelations that Zuckerberg employs a team of writers to oversee comments and posts on his official Facebook page.
