Google earns first ever Oscar nod for a VR film
Google has cemented its position at the cutting edge of virtual reality cinema after earning an Academy Award nomination for a short film shot exclusively in the new medium.
Pearl, an animated short, joins illustrious company such as ‘La-La Land’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’ in pursuit of Oscars glory by making its mark on the premier film awards with audiences drawn to its cartoon 360-degree visuals.
Compatible with the HTC Vive and YouTube the six-minute clip depicts a father daughter road trip with audiences able to turn, peer and crane in any direction to obtain a unique perspective on events with every playthrough.
Whilst the film can be viewed in bog standard 2D it is the 3D feature which truly comes alive with viewers given a more immersive experience which places you in the car alongside the main characters.
