US retailer Target has proven itself to be on the ball after striking a deal to become official partner of the US soccer league and becoming a shirt sponsor for Minnesota United.

The multi-year partnership was struck ahead of the league’s 22nd season and will see the retailers branding emblazoned across Minnesota’s shirts on primary match days in addition to pitch side advertising and marketing opportunities at the club’s home ground.

Nick Rogers, president of Minnesota United FC, said: “We are proud to announce that Target, a great Minnesota-based company, will be Minnesota United’s first MLS kit sponsor. Target believes they have a role to play in fuelling the potential of soccer and our players at all levels in Minnesota and the entire club is thrilled to have them as a partner.”

Kathy Carter, president of Soccer United Marketing, the commercial branch of MLS, added: “We’re excited to welcome Target to the soccer family. It’s great to see such a holistic approach being taken - from the professional ranks to the youth level. It’s also ideal timing as Target’s hometown club, Minnesota United FC, joins Major League Soccer this year. We look forward to working together for many years to come.”

Target’s sponsorship will commence on 3 March when Minnesota take on the Portland Timbers.

Last night Target announced it was promoting Rick Gomez as chief marketing officer.
