Former Unilever executive Alessandra Bellini has joined Tesco as chief customer officer, filling the top marketer role left vacant by Robin Terrell following his resignation last year.

Bellini has worked at FMCG-giant Unilever for over 20 years, most recently as the vice president for the food category in North America and food general manager for the USA.

“I’m delighted that Alessandra is joining the team at Tesco,” said chief executive Dave Lewis, who himself spent over 20 years at Unilever.

“Her experience in building brands will be a valuable asset in the next stage of building a truly differentiated Tesco brand. She understands how to put the customer at the heart of business decisions, and has a great track record of building market-leading brands and teams. I am very much looking forward to having her on the team.”

Bellini will join on 1 March when she will also become a member of the Executive Committee and the UK Leadership team.

She replaces Terrell who quit the supermarket last August after three years to “pursue a different direction”.

It comes as Tesco looks to maintain the moment it has built over the past year. Its sales have gradually recovered from the record losses it noted in last year in wake of the accounting scandal.

It's due to report on its performance over the crucial Christmas period tomorrow (12 January).
