Resident Evil 7 is poised for release on 27 January and for the first time ever will feature a virtual reality incarnation. However, the title's creators want to take the horror experience one step further, unveiling a unique "4D VR" blood-scented candle.

For the bargain price of £14.99 ($18.99) the officially-licensed accessory will give off odours of musty "old timber and blood" and is available for pre-order from 20 January. The Resident Evil series sees players fight off recurring outbreaks of zombies and other undead monsters, with the seventh edition designed to be viewed entirely in first-person perspective.

In a statement, the candle's retailer Merchoid revealed that Capcom, which publishes the games, had found the candle "scary enough" to approve it officially.

"We’d even suggest that using the Blood, Sweat and Fears 4D Candle is the definitive way to experience the game," said Merchoid community manager Jessica Adams. "The virtual reality experience is incredible, but we want to take you one step further than that. While playing the game, imagine if you could smell everything you could see and hear. The game becomes incredibly immersive as it tricks all your senses into thinking that you’re really there."

The candle will last gamers 18 to 20 hours, and is just the latest in a long line of scented innovations designed to pique fans' interest (and nostrils).

Last year, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker unveiled a Nosulus Rift 'fart simulator' to accompany South Park: The Fractured But Whole videogame, while later in 2016 Twelve South's scented 'New Mac' candle was an instant sell-out hit.
