Santa's Little Helper: Snapchat unveils interactive Christmas-themed selfie filter game

Snapchat is experimenting with the interactive element of its lenses format by inviting users to score points with their face in a festive game called Santa’s Little Helper.

The ephemeral messaging app has unveiled an experience which plants people's faces onto the body of an elf, challenging Snappers to collect presents and festive trinkets by sliding down a snowy slope.

Users control the elf by turning their heads left and right, meaning there’s no need for fancy accessories or handsets.

The addicting challenge marks the launch of a new native games feature for the app according to TechCrunch, however Mashable notes that the company has yet to comment on the development.

Lenses, which are essentially customisable augmented reality overlays, have proven popular with advertisers this year with brands like Dominos, 21st Century Fox and Sainsbury’s featuring sponsored versions in their campaigns.

If Snapchat does have plans to make further moves into the gaming space then it could open up another revenue stream for the company, which has spent the past year firming up what it can offer to advertisers and realigning its business.

Snapchat has previously allowed video ads, or Snap Ads, within its Discover section for publishers to launch games externally in browser windows, most recently with an Under Armour Cam Newton game.
