Ad-Rock AKA Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys has designed a sneaker whose proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood, the US non-profit organization that provides reproductive healthcare, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide.
At $97 a pair, the Keep x Ad-Rock midtop shoe was created through a partnership with vegan shoe creator, Keep. According to Pitchfork, Los Angeles-based Keep has also worked with Bon Iver, Animal Collective, Dinosaur Jr. and Tegan and Sara.
"Winter’s cold and I couldn’t find a warm sneaker to walk around in. Given the outcome of our current election, it’s gonna get a lot colder before we can feel that summer sun again" Horovitz said in a statement. " So I collaborated with my friend, [Keep Shoes founder] Una [Kim], not just because I wanted warm sneaks, but because I support small business. I support women-run business. I support Asian-American-run business. Net proceeds of this shoe will be donated to Planned Parenthood because I support a woman’s right to choose and feel that women should not be punished for making decisions about their own lives and bodies. If you have similar beliefs, you might wanna grab a pair."
Horovitz has been outspoken during the US presidential election by standing up for those he feels are being marginalized. In addition to supporting Planner Parenthood, in November Horovitz spoke at Yauch Park in Brooklyn, which was renamed for him in 2013, where anti-Semitic, pro-Trump graffiti was painted.
"Spray painting swastikas in a children’s playground is a messed-up thing to do," he said. "We've got to stand up against hate.”
