Across the globe, more than two million users faced an untimely demise with the site installing a banner at the top of some profile home pages declaring the death of people, including founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The generic tribute read: "We hope people who love ___ will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life."

Th company claimed that an update to the feature's messaging accidentally pushed the notification to two million users.

A spokeswoman told The Guardian: "For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialized pages was mistakenly posted to other accounts.

"This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it."
