Faced with increasingly daunting polls, which indicate that Hillary Clinton is pulling ahead in the race to become US president, Donald Trump has turned his fire on Alec Baldwin and Saturday Night Live to explain his flagging campaign.

Following broadcast of a comedy sketch at the Republican’s expense an unamused Trump took to Twitter to blast the "hit job" on his campaign, describing the show as ‘boring and unfunny’ as well as part of a wider media conspiracy to "rig" the election.

For good measure Trump also said Baldwin’s portrayal of him "stank" and called for the show to be "retired".

Despite or perhaps because of such protestations Saturday Night Live recorded its highest three week ratings since 2008 on the back of the skit.
