South African conglomerate Famous Brands has added Gourmet Burger Kitchen to its stable after gobbling the upmarket burger chain in a £120m deal.

Famous Brands have big plans for the business with the aim of opening up to 15 restaurants per year in the UK as it seeks to erode mass market giants such as McDonalds and Burger King.

An explosion in burger dining has taken Britain by storm in recent years with a host of new players setting up shop such as Byron, Shake Shack and Five Guys together with a plethora of independents.

Kiti Soininen, head of UK food and drink research at Mintel, said: “Consumers see freshly made burgers as the biggest marker of a gourmet burger venue, something that sets them apart, as this is not traditionally offered by fast food venues.

"Customisation is also a top expectation for gourmet offerings, in line with a more general demand for knowing what goes into one's food and the trend for personalisation."

Gourmet Burger Kitchen currently has 75 UK outlets compared to approximately 1,200 McDonald’s restaurants.
