Tesco is planning to roll out a new same-day 'click and collect' service in an attempt to keep pace with the increasingly competitive nature of online shopping.

Britain’s biggest supermarket will offer the new service across nearly 300 stores nationwide and will charge customers £2 per slot between Monday and Thursday and £3 for Friday and Saturday.

It will be made available in 90 per cent of Tesco stores which already offer the click and collect option and will require shoppers to place their order before 1pm before collecting them some time after 4pm.

Tesco’s latest plans come just one month after rival Sainsbury’s, which recently appointed Wieden + Kennedy to its advertising account, announced it would be implementing a same-day delivery service at 30 of its stores by the end of the year.

Amazon’s same day fresh food delivery service AmazonFresh has put supermarkets under increasing pressure to offer time-poor customers more options as convenience becomes increasingly crucial to maintaining customer loyalty.
