The deal will see doctors in China use the service to create personalised, evidence-based cancer treatment options. The Watson for Oncology service is able to work because Memorial Sloan Kettering has trained the AI, creating a cognitive computer programme.

It works by analysing big volumes of medical literature to identify individual treatment options as well as scoring and ranking medical literature and quickly summarizing patient records.

According to IBM, it is only available in English language but CognitiveCare will supply translation support in different Chinese dialects.

"IBM is committed to working with CognitiveCare as the first mover in China to bring Watson Health technologies into this market," said Deborah DiSanzo, general manager for IBM Watson Health.

According to IBM, cancer is China’s biggest killer and diagnosis of cancer is on the rise.

"Health leaders in Asia-Pacific are leading the way globally in advancing cancer care. The 21 hospitals in China that will adopt the Watson for Oncology offering join world-class facilities that are offering the power of Watson to their physicians and the adoption of Watson in China is indicative of the momentum we are seeing among health professionals worldwide for IBM's unique cognitive computing platform,” she said.

The Drum worked with IBM to launch the first AI-created magazine, using the technology to create interviews and analyse data. A highlight of the issue was using the technology to being the opinions of David Ogilvy back from the dead, allowing people working in the industry now to learn from his knowledge.
