Former President Bill Clinton delivered a long, personal tale of his romance with Hillary which charmed the Democratic convention and did much to make the would -be first woman president seem more human.

“In the spring of 1971,” Mr. Clinton who is 69 , began, “I met a girl.” She was a law student at the time and Bill said he proposed three times - the first time on a visit to Britain - before she finally said yes in 1975.

His tale stretched from their courtship to the birth of their daughter, Chelsea, and on to her time as secretary of state.

He presented Hillary as a “change maker” and contrasted his account with the way she was portrayed at last week’s Republican convention. “One is real,” he said. “The other is made up.”

Following Mr. Clinton, actress Meryl Streep went through through Mrs. Clinton’s career describing her as one of the women who have broken down barriers in American public life.

“How does she do it? Where does she get her grit and her grace?” Meryl asked.

Madeleine Albright, who served as secretary of state under Bill and was the first woman to hold the job, delivered a blistering criticism of Donald J. Trump’s foreign policy credentials.

“The truth is that a Trump victory would be a gift to Vladimir Putin,” she said. “And that should worry every American.”

Ms. Albright said she saw in Hillary Harry Truman’s “fighting spirit” and a leader who “listens more than she talks,” as well as someone who had been tested.

“We also know what it’s like to step off that plane with the words ‘United States of America’ on it,” Ms. Albright said adding another dig at Trump, “She knows that safeguarding freedom and security is not like hosting a reality TV show.

At the end of the night, Hillary appeared live on screen to address the convention. “What an incredible honor that you have given me,” she said, “and I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet.”

As little girls flocked round her she added, “If there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next.”
