In a post on its official blog, the company said more than 300 million of these use the app every single day, and that 80 per cent of the userbase was based outside of the US.

In comparison, photo messaging service Snapchat announced that 150 million users a day made use of the app, while Twitter sees 310 million users each month – 44 per cent of which log in every day.

Instagram's own figures are still surpassed by parent company Facebook, which clocked up a billion daily users for the first time in 2015.

The picture-sharing network's latest figures come following a number of changes made to the way both businesses and everyday users utilise the service earlier this year, including dedicated business pages, a new logo and plans to introduce an algorithmic timeline.
