Snapchat is launching 'Real Life' magazine

The social network is funding the new title, which will appeal to those looking for long-reads by publishing “essays, arguments and narratives about living with technology”.

Interestingly, rather than living within the app’s Discover section, the magazine will be hosted online and headed up by Snapchat employee turned editor-in-chief Nathan Jurgenson.

Writing in a blog post, Jurgenson touched upon Real Life’s content strategy, saying that the magazine “will be about how we live today and how our lives are mediated by devices”.

“We plan to publish one piece of writing every weekday, though we may eventually expand to other mediums and formats as well,” he added, hinting that the team hasn’t decided to forgo other platforms completely quite yet.

While Real Life will be backed up financially by Snapchat, Jurgenson was keen to highlight that the publisher will retain editorial independence in a bid to keep the focus on “writers and writing rather than clicks and shares”.

Senior editors include Rob Horning, Alexandra Molotkow and Sarah Nicole Prickett, who have previously contributed to titles like New Inquiry and Adult Magazine.
