Microsoft has revealed it is to help the public and private sectors track sales of legalised marijuana after partnering with technology start-up Kind Financial.

As part of the tie-up, Kind Financial will gain access to Microsoft’s government cloud, the only system available which currently meets government standards for the strictly regulated cannabis industry.

A Microsoft spokesman told the BBC: “Kind Financial is building solutions on our government cloud to help these agencies regulate and monitor controlled substances and items, and manage compliance with jurisdictional laws and regulations.”

The use, sale and possession of all forms of cannabis in the US is currently illegal in many states although several have created exemptions for medical and industrial uses.

In four of these; Alaska, Colorado, Washington and Oregon, the drug has been legalised for recreational use.
