Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature, for enabling friends and family to track down loved ones and confirm they are well in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

An attack by a lone gunman on a gay club left at least 50 people dead with the social network describing the incident as a terrorist attack following confirmation from media sources.

The emergency feature was first introduced in Japan back in 2014 in response to a spate of natural disasters there and allows people in the area to notify others and mark yourself as safe but this is the first usage of the system within the US itself.

Controversially Facebook will also send automated check notifications to individuals whom it thinks are within the affected areas and ask if you’re safe – a feature which came unstuck after a ‘local’ alert was accidentally issued to people around the globe following a terror attack in Pakistan.
