Official partner of the Rugby Football League and sponsor of the referees, Specsavers, has harnessed virtual reality technology to show just how hard match officials have it.

During the Super League onslaught known as Magic Weekend, Manning Gottlieb OMD and Fuse Sport + Entertainment created the Virtual Reality Referee Challenge in the fan zone at the weekend’s festival of rugby league at St James’ Park, Newcastle.

Fans were tasked with making the right call based on the play that they saw via a VR headset, with those taking part entered into a draw to win a VIP upgrade for the next match.

Rachael Cumberland-Dodd, senior campaign manager, marketing at Specsavers, said: “As champions of the referees we know how vital it is that they look after their eyes and maintain good visual acuity. We’re excited that through Virtual Reality we’re now able to give rugby league fans the opportunity to see the action from a new perspective and test themselves in big game decisions.”

Sam Battams, technology innovation director, Manning Gottlieb OMD added: “The Specsavers Virtual Reality Referee Challenge is a fantastic way for Specsavers to provide a new experience for Rugby fans which demonstrates the tough task referees face; a job where sharpness, knowledge, and of course eye sight, is critical. By working closely with the RFL, Hull KR, and a Super League referee, we were able to create an authentic and testing challenge for fans.”

The 360 degree video is viewable on Specsavers’ Facebook.
