The founder of digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin has revealed himself after years of speculation around his identity.

Secretive Australian computer scientist Craig Wright has come forward as the founder of the online currency, doing so to the BBC, Economist and GQ early on Monday morning (2 May).

Providing proof of his authenticity to each publication (early Bitcoin cryptographically keys), Wright has acknowledged that he is indeed the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto who was credited with founding the technology.

Having assumed the pseudonym for a number of years to distance himself from the upkeep of the currency, he comes forward now as the media (and the Australian government where he is a resident) were investigating Nakamoto’s true identity. His Bitcoin project was launched in 2008.

Wright is rumoured to have accumulated as much as one million Bitcoins during his stewardship of the currency, currently valued roughly at around $450m.
