The Drum is proud to announce the launch of a new women’s leadership podcast, Exceptional Women Out West (EWOW), highlighting and celebrating the great achievement, lives and perspectives of leading and emerging industry women in the western United States and Canada.

The debut show features Margaret Johnson, ECD and partner at Goodby Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco and is hosted by Doug Zanger, The Drum’s North America editor at large, who is based in Portland, Oregon.

“I did a similar show in 2009 that was focused on women in the Pacific Northwest,” said Zanger. “In my new role, I saw a real opportunity to highlight some truly amazing women in the region I cover and live in out west.”

The show, with an “audio magazine” format, digs more deeply in to interests and motivations — and features tangible wisdom and advice, such as the “must list,” a segment dedicated to specific things that people should learn, read, do and experience. In the first episode, one of Johnson’s “musts” included having extra work or a “side hustle,” which ended up resulting in an important anti-cyberbullying campaign that was done by the agency.

“Like us, Doug is very passionate about parity in the industry,” said The Drum editor, Stephen Lepitak. “This is a project that we all felt was important and, with his dedication, we know that we can tell these stories well.”

“The most pivotal and important times in my career have been when I’ve sat in the middle of diversity — including gender, race and LGBT,” noted Zanger. “It happened when I worked at a Portland hip hop radio station and it’s happening now with The Drum. I feel a genuine responsibility to do what I can to continue the conversation — because I’ve been lucky to experience the power of diversity and feel the industry can thrive when everyone has that same chance.”

Upcoming show guests include:

  • Seema Miller, Managing Partner, Chief Strategy Officer, David&Goliath, El Segundo, CA
  • Keri Elmsly, Executive Creative Director, Second Story, Portland, OR
  • Kat Gordon, Founder, The 3% Conference, Palo Alto, CA
  • The Cybercode Twins, Los Angeles, CA
  • Dianne Wilkins, CEO, Critical Mass, Calgary, AB
  • Tsilli Pines, Co-Founder and Director, Design Week Portland, Portland, OR
  • Jean Freeman, Chief Operating Officer, Zambezi, Culver City, CA

Starting April 13th, the show will be available on SoundCloud and YouTube, with future syndication planned for iTunes.
