EBay subsidiary StubHub is dipping its toes into virtual reality by offering ticket purchasers the opportunity to preview available seat position in immersive 3D before making their selection.

Built into the iOS and Android StubHub app the system will display a real time perspective of the chosen view on your smartphone or tablet screen, which can then be rotated in space to look for obstructions.

It will also be compatible Google Cardboard and the Gear VR for those seeking a more immersive experience.

Marcus Shelksohn, StubHub’s head of product for mobile apps, said: “We didn’t want to do something just for fun or [as] a marketing gimmick. Are those seats that are closer to the court really worth the extra $50?”

The VR ticket experience is currently only available to purchasers of Final Four National College Football matches and baseball tickets for AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.
