Simpsons writer Dan Greaney has spoken out about ‘Bart to the Future’, an episode released in 2000 that told a tale of Trump’s ruination of America as president.

With the Simpsons remaining on the air since 1989, the show has built up a surprising number of accurate predictions, including a potential Trump presidency.

The gag sees Lisa Simpson become the first "straight female" US president, having “inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump”.

On utilising the current GOP frontrunner as the man who destroyed the country, Greaney told the Hollywood Reporter: “It was a warning to America.”

“And that just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”

He added that he cannot remember who exactly first pitched the gag but stressed that it was important for “Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing”.

What could be a rocky ride for America is proving profitable for those willing to have a laugh at the mogul's rise to power. Hat sales from the #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain outselling #MakeAmericaGreatAgain products in New Jersey and beyond attest to this.
