STV chief executive, Rob Woodward, reveals plans to launch news app next month

STV are readying the launch of a dedicated news app which has been in development for the last two years.

The STV News app is due for release sometime next month and will provide a host of Scottish news as well as sport and weather.

STV chief executive Rob Woodward told The Drum that STV has “undertaken a huge amount of research and identified a gap in the market which led to the creation of the app.”

Woodward revealed that the app would encorporate “heavily captioned short form news clips,” similar to those which STV news has recently begun using on Facebook. The videos will also have use 6 second prerole ads.

“We have been using the short form news clips on Facebook for three months now and in that time they have generated 12 million views which is far more than before.”

News of the app follows on from the release of STV's annual financial figures which revealed healthy profits and the company's lowest net debt in a decade.

The free app has been internally developed and has undergone external testing during the two year production cycle. No firm date has been set for the iOS and Android release however more details will follow before the app's release.
