US telecoms giant Verizon is said to be preparing a bid to takeover Yahoo after Tim Armstrong, CEO of Verizon subsidiary AOL, was tasked with heading up informal negotiations.

Verizon, Yahoo

The latest news firms up earlier speculation sparked by Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam who openly broached the possibility of a Yahoo buy-out during an appearance on CNBC last week.

During an appearance on Jim Cramer’s ‘Mad Money’ slot McAdam said: “We have to understand the trends. But then at the right price, I think marrying up some of their assets with AOL and the leadership would be good.”

For its part Yahoo has expressed itself open to sale of its core internet business as part of a strategic repositioning of the business in the wake of disappointing earnings.

Both firms are thought to be a good match for each other with Verizon eager to push its go90video-streaming service and Yahoo delivering a ready made audience.
