John McLeish, the managing director of integrated marketing agency Equator, took to the streets of Glasgow this week to help sell The Big Issue.

McLeish took to the Glasgow streets during 'Vendor Week'

McLeish braved the brisk Glasgow weather to take part in ‘Vendor Week’ along with a number of celebrities, business and media luminaries to help boost funds for The Big Issue at what is traditionally a really quiet time of the year for sales of the title. Magazine publisher International Network of Street Papers (INSP) asked guest vendors to take an hour out of their working week to help raise awareness of issues around homelessness and raise money to support INSP.

McLeish said: “It was important for me to get involved in Vendor Week because homelessness is happening on our doorsteps. I have always supported Big Issue vendors because I think anyone who is prepared to work at creating a better life for themselves deserves support and encouragement.”

McLeish, who had already raised £2264 for the charity, said of his stint as a guest vendor: “It was a cold day in Glasgow but I was only there for an hour and I learned from the experience that we can all do more. I had support from real vendors on the street encouraging me and telling me how to engage with customers and I learned that they normally only sell about three Big Issues an hour.

“Unfortunately there are more and more homeless people on our streets. I believe that if we can raise awareness and support such a good cause simply by getting involved in vendor week, then that has to be a good thing. If by the likes of myself and other businessmen like Jim Duffy of Entrepreneurial Spark – and celebrities get involved to help improve the lives of a few people, then it’s a few more than the day before.”

Those interested in supporting Vendor Week can make an online donation to INSP.
