Security specialists SplashData have dusted off their annual look at the most popular passwords of 2015 after completing a survey of the 2m leaked passwords over the past year to be published by hackers.

It shows that the old favourite ‘123456’ remains the most popular choice for those who just can’t be bothered, just edging out the slightly more imaginative ‘password’.

It’s not all good news for hackers however with the report authors recording the lowest percentage of people resorting to common passwords of all recent studies, standing at just 2.2 per cent.

Morgan Slain, chief executive of SplashData said: “Passwords based on simple patterns on your keyboard remain popular despite how weak they are. Any password using numbers alone should be avoided, especially sequences. As more websites require stronger passwords or combinations of letters and numbers, longer keyboard patterns are becoming common passwords, and they are still not secure.”

One interesting new addition at number 25 shows that the Force is wrong with the many web users who chose Star Wars as their password.
