Raunchy men’s magazine Penthouse has announced that it is to discontinue publishing a print edition with a focus on digital touted to lower its operating expenses.

The American men's magazine will turn its back on more than 50 years on newsstands as adult magazines suffer the squeeze from readily available, free online porn.

General Media Communications, which runs the brand, said: “This will be a new way for its readers to experience the world's best adult magazine.

"Reimagined for the preferred consumption of content today by consumers, the digital version of Penthouse Magazine will combine and convert everything readers know and love about the print magazine experience to the power of a digital experience."

As a result, the publication has closed up shop in New York, now operating solely from Los Angeles. Print subscribers will have their memberships shifted to online. The print offering will continue during the transition period.

The move comes months after Playboy cast aside nude models to give more weight to the “I just buy it for the articles” argument in a classier overhaul.
