Research firm International Data Corporation confirmed that the double digit decline is the largest it has ever recorded and attributed the drop to longer lasting equipment and insatiable demand for tablets and smartphones.

IDC Worldwide PC Tracker vice president Loren Loverde said: "The PC market remains competitive and the economic environment weakened further with the recent drop in the Chinese stock market.

"However, PC replacements should pick up again in 2016, particularly later in the year.”

Overall IDC recorded 71.9m PC shipments in the fourth quarter.
