An Israeli TV reporter was left requiring stitches after his demonstration of a stab-proof vest went badly awry, wounding him in the upper back.

Eitam Lachover donned the protective garment as part of a segment demonstrating desperate measures being taken by Israelis to avoid Palestinian knife attacks.

The incident saw Yaniv Montakyo, vice president of the vest manufacturer, stab the reporter in an area afforded no protection by the vest, resulting in Lachover being rushed to hospital to receive stitches.

Despite the failure Israeli state broadcaster Channel 2 TV vowed to broadcast footage of the demonstration gone wrong later today.

The incident comes amidst an atmosphere of heightened tension in Jerusalem which has witnessed a wave of stabbing attacks over the past three months, resulting in the deaths of 19 Israelis and one American alongside 120 Palestinians, amongst them 81 alleged attackers.
