Johnston Press newspaper The Yorkshire Post has appointed company veteran James Mithchinson as its editor.

Mitchinson will be tasked with growing the title’s audience strategy and better aligning its editorial and commercial arms when he joins next month.

He will report to Jeremy Clifford, who was appointed to the newly-created editor-in-chief of Johnston Press role at the start of the month (1 December). The position was formed to establish an editorial strategy across the publications through innovation and best-in-trade practice and Mitchinson’s role will be key to ensuring The Yorkshire Post’s contribution to both those goals.

Mitchinson previously held numerous roles across the Johnston Press portfolio, including editorial director for north Midlands and south Yorkshire, and most recently editor at The Sheffield Star.

He has driven success throughout his 13 years at Johnston Press; his editorial team at The Star winning various awards including a Press Gazette commendation for The Star’s ‘Heroes of Hillsborough’ 25-page commemorative special, and most recently the O2 Media Awards Best Regional Daily Newspaper 2015 for Yorkshire and Humberside.

Further to this announcement, Nicola Furbisher has been appointed to the role of editor at The Yorkshire Evening Post. Currently managing editor of The Yorkshire Post, she will continue to hold this title also and will work with Mitchinson across both titles.
