A hacker group calling itself ‘Phantom Squad’ has warned on Twitter that it is preparing an attack on the PlayStationNetwork and Xbox Live this Christmas in order to highlight lax security.

The anonymous posts claim responsibility for a series of attacks carried out against gaming platforms earlier in the year as well as a recent Reddit assault to back up their claims.

Amongst a number of threats issued in recent weeks the group posted: “We will take down servers on Christmas. Or Christmas Eve, who knows? It’s up to you. Will you waste your money on a console this Christmas to find that It is #Offline?"

Both PlayStationNetwork and Xbox Live are no strangers to hackers, having suffered down time for several days at the end of last year after being bombarded with an overwhelming volume of fake traffic.

The Twitter account responsible for issuing the threats has now been suspended.
