Former Subway ambassador Jared Fogle, who was yesterday jailed for almost 16 years, claimed that the Subway diet was partly responsible for his child pornography sex crimes.

Fogle’s defence psychiatrist made the argument in yesterday’s trial, which saw the one-time face of the sandwich chain sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to child pornography and sex charges.

Forensic psychiatrist representing the 38 year-old, John Bradford, said that “once he lost weight, it seemed as though in a short time he had hyper-sexuality.”

“There are brain disorders that can be associated with sexual drive,” continued Bradford.

Fogle’s ties with Subway stem back to when he was morbidly obese, weighing 420 pounds, however he famously dropped 245 pounds by eating a diet which primarily consisted of eating Subway sandwiches.

His defence team argued that his addiction of food was replaced when he lost weight with an addiction of sex which was skewed by his paedophilia and impulse control issues.

Judge Tanya Walton Pratt was unconvinced by the claims and went beyond the prosecution’s sentence recommendation of 12 ½ years. During the trial she cut Fogle off mid-sentence when he was describing how his wife would be a single mother as she interjected: “You gave your wife $7 million, so she'll be OK."

Russell Taylor, former head of Jared’s child obesity charity The Jared Foundation, was also embroiled in the trial which found that Jared’s illegal activates accelerated when he took over the charity.

Fogle obtained and viewed child pornography given to him by his co-conspirator, Russell Taylor, which included homemade material from hidden cameras in Taylor’s home.

Pratt announced her sentence and then read from a statement by a victim’s mother. She said her daughter had contemplated suicide and uses medication for sleep, depression and anxiety. She is 16.

Following the scandal Subway has moved to put a different face in its advertising with a series of new ads featuring one of the hottest new names in the NFL, Marcus Mariota.
