September's charts from SimilarWeb prove that original airings of major shows don't matter as much as they used to. Even though Game Thrones had its finale in June it still topped the charts for HBO GO and HBO.com Ray Donovan is in the lead for Showtime. Here are the charts and insights.

HBO

Sho.com

  • Just like July and August, Ray Donovan continues to be extremely popular for Showtime viewers and remains number 1 for September. The crime drama finished another stellar season on September 27th, and it will be interesting to see if it can remain in the top spot for next month.
  • Homeland’s fifth season began on October 5th and fans have been revisiting the show in droves. It continues to climb our charts and sits at number 2 for sho.com. Will a new season of Homeland replace Ray Donovan at the top of our list?
  • Despite airing the season 3 finale and increasing its traffic share, Masters of Sex fell to the number 3 spot for September. The show will be returning in 2016 and could hang around the top 5 for months to come.
  • Shameless remained in fourth place in our ranking with 10% of the traffic share. These are quite impressive numbers for a show that hasn’t aired a new episode since April 2015.
  • The Affair continues to climb steadily as fans prepare for the second season, which started in October. The show climbed only slightly from 7th to 5th, but if the trend continues, The Affair could be in a top 3 spot for October.
  • Penny Dreadful and Dexter both moved down in the rankings, in August they sat at 4th and 5th respectively, but shifted down, Penny Dreadful to 7th and Dexter to 8th
  • New to the September list is Inside the NFL, a sports show featuring highlights, commentary, and analysis on a weekly basis. It commanded 3% of September’s top 10 traffic and sits at number 9.
  • Finally, Californication wraps up the sho.com list at number 10. Hank Moody hasn’t been in a new episode in over a year but that hasn't stopped fans from revisiting his escapades.

Showtime Anytime:

  • Ray Donovan once again proves its popularity by topping the list of sho.com and showtimeanytime.com for yet another month.
  • In fact, the top 4 shows on showtimeanytime.com mirror sho.com and feature Homeland at number 2, Masters of Sex at 3, and Shameless at 4.
  • Interestingly, showtimeanytime.com viewers are revisiting Polyamory: Married & Dating, a show that’s been on hiatus for 2 years. It took 5% of the traffic share and claimed the number 5 spot on the list
  • Nurse Jackie didn’t rank on sho.com but the dark comedy-drama took 4.5% of the traffic share and the sixth spot in September.
  • Mirroring the rankings on sho.com, Penny Dreadful claimed the number 7 spot on showtimeanytime.com.
  • In the final three spots are shows that didn’t rank in sho.com, beginning with House of Lies at number 8. A fifth season will premiere in 2016 and once it does, expect House of Lies to climb in the rankings.
  • It’s been 5 years since fans of The Tudors have seen a new episode but the show-- set in 16th century England-- still claimed 3% of the traffic.
  • Finally, The Borgias, another historical drama, ranked 10th for showtimeanytime.com viewers. Its traffic share is hovering around 2% and the show may fall out of the top 10 ranking come October.

HBO.com

  • Game of Thrones hasn’t aired a new episode since June, but that didn’t stop the show from being hbo.com’s most popular. It stays at number 1 on our top ten, and even saw its traffic slightly increase from 30% in August up to 32% in September. Winter is coming, and GoT fans keep revisiting the beloved show.
  • Right on the heels of GoT, John Oliver commanded 30% of our top 10 traffic, a huge boost from the 14% he received in August. If this trend continues, John Oliver will beat Jon Snow as hbo.com’s most popular Jo(h)n.
  • Hbo.com viewers love political themed talkshows and Real Time with Bill Maher commanded 10% of the top 10 traffic and sits at number 3 on the ranking.
  • On September 27th VICE aired a special episode entitled “Fixing the System” discussing the U.S. justice and penal system. As a result, the show jumped from 10th on last month’s list to 4th in September.
  • Hard Knocks, the sports reality show that follows the Houston Texans, took a huge hit in this month’s rankings. The show saw its traffic share decrease from 19% in August to 7% in September. Meanwhile, the Texans have struggled on the field, and sit with a dismal 2-5 record after 7 weeks.
  • Crime dramas are extremely popular on other networks but HBO only has True Detective in its top 10. Season 2 wrapped up on August 9th and fans are still waiting for a formal announcement regarding a third season.
  • Ballers and Silicon Valley, 2 HBO comedies, remain mostly unchanged from last month. Ballers moved down a spot and sits at 7th, while Silicon Valley moved up and now ranks 8th.
  • The Neistat Brothers is a surprising addition to the September top 10, the show only aired 8 episodes the last of which was on July 31st, 2010.
  • Finally, Vice President turned President Selina Meyer continues to delight fans of Veep who ensured that the show returned to our top 10 after a month’s hiatus.

HBO GO:

  • The top 2 slots on HBO GO mirror hbo.com with Game of Thrones sitting atop the list and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver at number 2.
  • After the top 2, there are several shows which make the HBO GO list but are not ranked on hbo.com. These shows occupy the number 3-6 slots.
  • The most popular and most surprising of these is The Wire, which managed to double its traffic share from August. It’s been over 7 years since The Wire aired a new episode but HBO GO viewers still love the Baltimore-based crime drama.
  • Entourage continues to piggyback off the success of the movie spin off. The ever popular show saw its traffic share grow slightly from 6% in August to 8% in September.
  • Sopranos fell out of the top 5 in September and currently occupies the 8th spot in September. If this trend continues, Tony Soprano will find himself outside the top 10 ranking for October.
  • Unlike the rapid growth of PiedPiper, Silicon Valley remained static and stood pat at 6th.
  • Veep is more popular with GO users and takes the 7th spot with 6.5% of September’s traffic. With a looming American election, the show may continue to climb our rankings.
  • The Knick didn’t make our top 10 in August, but with a new season beginning in October, fans are revisiting old episodes of the hospital based drama. As a result, the show sits at 8th in September with 6% of the traffic share.
  • What do HBO GO viewers have against Bill Maher? The controversial talk show host ranked third with hbo.com viewers, but on HBO GO, the show finds itself way down at ninth.
  • Finally, Larry David stays at number 10 on HBO GO’s September rankings. Rumours have been swirling that a 9th season of Curb Your enthusiasm is in the works, and if it is, expect the show to climb our rankings.
