Apple’s next gadget may turn out to be a fully-fledged self-driving vehicle according to reports in the Wall Street Journal, which suggest such a car could appear on our roads as early as 2019.
Fresh from the lukewarm reception to have greeted the Apple Watch, the Cupertino juggernaut is said to be tripling the manpower devoted to the initiative, codenamed Project Titan, to 600 people.
This follows claims that Apple had already met with officials from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles to discuss its plans and has already begun eyeing up test tracks to put prototype vehicles through their paces.
The WSJ has long been on the inside loop as regards Apple’s transport ambitions having first reported on plans to develop an electric car in February.
Despite Apple’s enthusiasm significant technical hurdles remain to be overcome to realise this dream with observers sceptical that Apple can meet its ambitious schedule whilst pointing out that a fully autonomous car is unlikely.
