The Kentucky clerk who refused to provide marriage licences to gay couples has become the target of a scripture-quoting billboard defending same-sex marriage.

Kim Davis recently endured a five day prison stint for refusing to rubber-stamp gay marriages which she argued clashed with her Christian beliefs. In response, non-profit Planting Peace issued a billboard in Rowan Country, Kentucky, where Davis calls home.

It reads: "Dear Kim Davis, the fact that you can't sell your daughter for three goats and a cow means we've already redefined marriage."

It referenced the fact a literal bible definition of marriage in Exodus said women can be bought and sold into marriage.

Aaron Jackson, president of Planting Peace, told NBC that the $500 ad will be in place for a month adding: “The anti-LGBT movement is selective in what rules to follow and how they choose to define ‘traditional’ institutions or values.”

Davis today (Monday 14 September) returned to work stating her deputies may sign off gay marriages instead.
