David Cameron has been caught up in his own Gordon Brown-style gaffe after being heard on mic saying Yorkshire people “hate each other”.

Ahead of a speech in Leeds, the prime minister, who was off camera but wearing a mic, said: “We just thought people in Yorkshire hated everyone else, we didn’t realise they hated each other so much.”

The slip up is reminiscent of when Gordon Brown was overheard describing Gillian Duffy, a woman he’d just met at a meet and greet in Rochdale ahead of the 2010 General Election, as a “bigoted woman”.

Cameron is in Leeds today to make a speech on the economy.
