Tasteless Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume sparks outrage

Transgender supporters have reacted with horror to a tasteless Caitlyn Jenner inspired Halloween costume after themed shorts, padded top, pageant sash and wig were advertised for sale by Wholesale Costumes.

The unisex ‘Call me Caitlyn’ piece is being advertised for sale via the website for $49.50 and is categorised as ‘humorous’, promising that wearers will ‘get a few laughs out of your friends’.

Jenner recently appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair and has become a prominent figurehead for the transgender community but this offered no protection from costume makers seeking a topical garment to appal Halloween-goers with.

A change.org petition calling for the costume to be discontinued read: “To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse," the petition says. "In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.
