Welcome to Brand of the Day, where we pick the brand making headlines and explain what you need to know about why it's in the news.

Former Subway ambassador Jared Fogle has placed the brand's name in the headlines recently following his arrest. He has agreed to plead guilty to distributing and receiving child pornography and engaging in sex acts with minors according to his attorney.

Fogle is due to appear in court in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning and will plead guilty as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Under the deal he will seek a sentence from five to 12.5 years in prison and has agreed to pay $1.4m in restitution to 14 minor victims, who will each receive $100,000.

Subway quickly severed ties with Fogle after authorities searched his home July and arrested him. He had been a brand ambassador for the company for 15 years after attributing his 245 pounds weight loss to eating Subway sandwiches.

Here’s more on the Subway brand.

Subway has over 41,000 locations worldwide which means, since launching in 1965, it has opened on average 2,700 locations each year. It’s main rival McDonald's has around 5,000 less locations.

Subway serves about 7.6 million subs every day.

The first Subway was called Pete's Super Submarines in recognition of family friend Dr. Peter Buck who lent a 17 year-old Fred DeLuca $1000 to open sandwich shop.

There are a number of unusual Subway locations around the world including a military base in Germany, a car showroom in California and a church in Buffalo, New York which is owned and operated as a franchise by the church itself..

Forbes estimates that Subway’s annual sales total around $20bn.
