Marks & Spencer invites mockery with ‘Putting the D in bread’ ad claim
Marks & Spencer has raised more than eyebrows with an in-store ad stating the outlet is ‘Putting the D in bread’.
A tweet of the ad did the rounds on social media with many users quick to point of the sexual connotations of “The D”.
Below is “The D” as described by the Urban Dictionary – a webpage vigilant copywriters should refer to in order to avoid such gaffes.
The in-store ads were erected to promote the outlet’s Vitamin D-heavy bread. Social media users are oft quick to jump on a genitalia pun, the outlet had a rough time on Twitter on Monday.
@marksandspencer I took your "Putting the D in Bread" campaign literally and I am now banned from every branch in the UK. THIS IS UNFAIR.

That M&S 'putting the D in bread' sign has been there for AGES. When it first came into work, oh did we laugh. — Darren Grimes (@grimesdarren) August 18, 2015
Marks & Spencer's advertising bread with the slogan "putting the D in bread". American Pie inspired? — Louis Scorza (@LouisScorza) August 18, 2015
Putting The D In Bread isn't a gaffe, it's advertising gold. — Marc Mayo (@ThatMarcMayo) August 18, 2015

Who the hell thought 'Putting the D in bread' was a good line? I think it's time for a new agency! — LJ (@laurajohaigh) August 18, 2015
Is the slot a copywriter's nightmare... or an advertising masterclass? (You do now know Marks & Spencer has a bread range that is high in vitamin D after all).
