Napster has claimed the days of free streaming on Spotify are numbered because the freemium business model is not sustainable.

"In terms of Spotify, there is no evidence that their 'freemium' business model is sustainable, as their numbers for the last two years show," said Napster in a statement.

Making a thinly-veiled dig at Apple Music, the statement added: "We take a localised approach to music suggestions, tapping into the culture of every market to make sure we're surfacing the most relevant music for our members regardless of where they live. No person in LA or London is telling Napster users what to think is cool."

Napster has around three million premium subscribers and, according to Spotify data, it has over 75 million active users, only 20 million of which pay for the premium service.

Previous reports have suggest major record labels are putting pressure on Spotify to get rid of the ad-supported free tier.
