Tech giant Apple has claimed that half of its new starts between June 14 and 15 were either female, Black, Hispanic, or Native American.

The firm’s diversity report underlined its efforts to become more inclusive. Globally, between June 14 and 15, Apple employed 11,000 women – up almost two thirds on the previous period.

It also saw Black staff increased by 50 per cent (2,200) and Hispanics 66 per cent (2,700).

Apple chief executive Tim Cook released a statement on the push: “Diversity is critical to innovation and it is essential to Apple’s future. We aspire to do more than just make our company as diverse as the talent available to hire. We must address the broad underlying challenges, offer new opportunities, and create a future generation of employees as diverse as the world around us.

“We believe in equality for everyone, regardless of race, age, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.

Cook did concede “there is a lot more work to be done” at Apple.
