Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has garnered the most buzz on social media following last night’s GOP debate, taking home 30 per cent of mentions – or nearly 30,000 mentions per hour, according to social media marketing software company Spredfast.

Far behind Trump in second place is neurosurgeon Ben Carson, with only eight per cent of mentions.

Yet for those just using Twitter – and specifically the hashtag ‘#GOPDebate’ - social media monitoring firm Brandwatch found that 29 per cent of tweets with that hashtag included Texas Senator Ted Cruz while only 17 per cent included Trump. Close behind was former Florida governor Jeb Bush with 15 per cent.

Brandwatch also found that Carson had the most positive sentiment related to social media posts with the hashtag ‘#GOPDebate’ while Trump and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker had the most negative sentiment.

In terms of demographics, 60 per cent of people using the hashtag ‘#GOPDebate’ in the past week have been men while 40 per cent have been women.

In total, there were 136,932 tweets with the hashtag ‘#GOPDebate’ and 228,812 retweets at the time Brandwatch completed tracking the data.
